Marshall Miller grew up in New Cumberland PA and is a retired professional geologist/construction project manager living in Lancaster, Ohio. He has been working in stained glass and making fossil jewelry for over 15 years and has completed commissioned windows and lamp shades for homes and businesses using the Tiffany technique (copper foil). Millers' work is highly influenced by nature and geologic processes. His stained glass art commonly contains agates and glass cabochons in flowing layers inspired by sedimentary erosional features, structural discontinuities and faults.

Artist Statement -

When I photograph, I want to evoke a sense of place, illuminated by light that reveals the shadows of existence that become our realities. I try to express a sense of loss from a forgotten past history that I feel still inhabits the buildings, structures or places by conjuring up images of spirituality, mysticism and otherworldliness. I want to evoke an emotional response from the viewer rather than a depiction of fact and strive for these unseen histories to provide a new atmosphere of thoughts and experiences.

Additionally, I want the viewer to look at my photographs as portraits of our ancestors. As such they serve as reminders that we have all walked in someone else's footsteps; that it is impossible to cut oneself off from the past.

With this idea in mind, I try to visually capture in something ordinary-the wonder, the magic and the extraordinary. I want the viewer to stop, to be intrigued, to look into the apparently familiar and discover seeing something for the first time as if it were a brand new experience.

Most of my work today is produced using a digital work flow. Moving into the digital realm has made me a student again, learning how to get my feelings expressed into a photograph using a computer. Visually, I prefer the effect of the black and white photograph because of the minimal distraction it provides, the emphasis on light, the simplicity of the images and the focus on line and form, but then again there is a lot of great color out there in this world, so you will see some photographs in color.

With these ideas in mind, I try not to make 'pretty' photographs because quite frankly anyone can do that, but to make a composition that goes deeper to make you think, ponder and question, to explore what we have lost, gained or didn't need. To connect with a photograph or any piece of artwork for that matter, it must resonate with experiences, events and emotions that are unique to you, the viewer, and I hope that my work can, in some small way, accomplish that.

Jean graduated from Dickinson College with a degree in Art and Art History. She has a passion for photography with a special interest in the black and white process along with other seldom used historical methods to produce emotional interpretations of a particular subject.

Dianne has an Associates Degree in Fine Arts from Morris County Community College; four years of group study with New England egg-tempera-and-oil artist Albert Matzer; and several workshop experiences with Pennsylvania and Maryland artists in pastels, oils and perspective drawing.
The artist taught adult fine arts in Manchester, Conn.; she offered workshops for the New Jersey Teen Arts Program, Princeton, N.J.; and also held crafting workshops for the Pennsylvania Gourd Society. She has been a juried artisan with the New York State Renaissance Faire (Renaissance Entertainment Corp.) as the proprietor of Renaissance Portraits.

This image, dated June 10th, is from the recently completed 2011 Gettysburg Fringe Festival Plein Air Paint Out. Dianne Lorden is working along Seminary Ridge, in the vicinity of General Lee's Headquarters.

Here, she is working in pastel at Stephen's Knoll.

Dianne is also known for her woodburned gourds and shamantic rattles. We currently have 3 pieces of her gourd work and 1 rattle at the gallery.

"James Krabiel was born in Louisiana in 1983, but spent most of his early life in Virginia Beach, VA where he spent his childhood to young adult years. After high school, he attended the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and graduated with a B.A. in Fine Art. He now resides in Carlisle, Pa, where he works in the art department at Dickinson College, and as a fabricator for Metal Expressions Ltd. He also works as the art director and curator for the Haverstick Gallery and Studios, and volunteered at the Carlisle Art Learning Center, where he served on the board of directors.

Many of his sculptures are working assemblages of found art, combined with carved, welded or other constructed metal and natural materials. His combination of synthetic materials coalesced with natural ones counters the representation of energy in his paintings, thereby creating a thematic dichotomy. This approach parallels the paradoxical dichotomy of energy as both a fluxed and constant entity within our reality. This is best demonstrated by his kinetic and mobile sculptures, which celebrate energy through both simplistic hinges and pulleys as well as more complex, fully functional motors. Whether intricately detailed and carved out, or minimally designed and shaped, the dynamic and versatility displayed in the kinetic energy of his sculptures remind us that energy is not inert or finite, even within an object that at first glance, appears to be so. The form and shape of Krabiel's sculptures are mirrored by those in his paintings, further correlating the relationships between abstracted, spiritual and kinetic energies."

Amber Kane’s creative process starts in her head. She lets ideas simmer; working out potential kinks and allowing the projects develop in her mind. When she can no longer contain it, she then gets busy with the actual handcrafting of the piece. Kane has, even as a child, loved art, experimentation, and process. She learned the basics of knitting and embroidery from her grandmother. When she took her first weaving class, while attending Messiah College, studying Art Education, Amber found her childhood love of yarn rekindled to a roaring fire. After purchasing her own loom, Kane attempted to follow patterns in a book, but was unsatisfied. When she walked away from patterns and rules and began to play, she found her artistic voice. She is fearless, abandoning many of the traditional rules of weaving, finding joy in the movement of the warp strings as they wrap around the take-up beam. “I’ve always loved the process of creating, rules and patterns were holding me back. The freedom of just creating is liberating.” About her work, she says, “I’m never sure where it’s going. I try to listen to myself and to the materials and see what happens.” What happens is spectacular.

Artist’s Statement

A truly effective image is evocative for the viewer, just as the experience in the moment was for the photographer. As for many individuals, a sense of place and permanence is important to me. But we are all on a journey in this life, seeking and thirsting for what we do not understand, for spiritual meaning in our life and in our relationships with our families and friends, and with the Sacred. Celtic peoples spoke of “thin places”, where the veil separating us from the other side is briefly transparent. It is in those places, on that Holy Ground, those experiences in the natural world, which compel me to photograph. I hope that at least some of my images offer a glimpse through that veil for the viewer. No artist could wish for more.

A Mix Of Artistic Disciplines

Hmm...could this really be a small town outside of the Pennsylvania State Capitol? Believe it.

Yesterday evening...a rainy Wednesday in the middle of January, Brath and Hughes Fine Art was full of energy. Brownyn Jean Hughes is shown preparing a large painting for the upcoming February featured show titled "Bold Florals". Strolling musician Betsy performed pieces from Charlie Daniels to Michael W. Smith.

We enjoy hosting events and bringing together the community. Last night was completely unplanned. The Muse was on the move.

Betsy will be strolling through the gallery with her violin during our February First Friday Public Reception from 6pm to 9pm. We have 2 featured exhibits that are sure to bring a smile and a laugh.

If you are from the Central PA region, you are likely to have seen Deb Kreiger's paintings, cards and Christmas ornaments. Deb grew up in Central Pennsylvania. She and her husband Scott live in Mechanicsburg, where they raised a son Jason, who was nurtured with artistic talent and graduated from Savannah Collage of Art and Design as an animation major. Deb studied Fine Art at York Academy of Arts in York, PA. She also studied under many local and nationally known artists. Deb is becoming known for her transparent watercolor paintings. She uses bright fresh color and textures to transform her subjects. She keeps a limited palette to keep the colors fresh. Nature is her love, but she paints various subjects with ease. She acquires her research from day to day life as well as her travels throughout the country. Her camera is always at the ready to capture inspiration in photographs. Deb carries her cheerful personality into her paintings. She paints with passion and confidence. Her goal is to give good energy and a smile to all who view her work.

Deb shows at a number of art associations, such as York Art Association, Perry County Council of the Arts, Harrisburg Art Association, and Mechanicsburg Art Center. She is also a member of "The Daily Painters of Pennsylvania". http://www.dailypaintersofpennsylvania.blogspot.com/ . The artist and her son recently designed the official logo for the professional group as shown.

Deb participates in many community service projects. She has served as co-chairperson on an 85-foot mural, painted by members of Penn's Woods Painters for Cumberland County Children's Services in 2001. She has participated in painting murals that were on display at several of the Harrisburg Symphony Show Houses. She painted an ornament, which was chosen for the White House Blue Room Christmas tree and attended the artist reception at the White House with Mrs. Laura Bush on December 1, 2004. Deb painted an ornament to represent Pennsylvania for the Library of Congress Christmas Tree and attended their celebration in Washington on December 14, 2005. In 2009 she had an ornament juried in and hung on the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery's Christmas tree in Washington D.C. In 2008, 2009, and 2010 she has had artwork juried into the Mid Atlantic Garden Show in York PA. Deb had artwork accepted in the annual juried York Art Association show in 2008. She also has exhibited in the juried Lititz Outdoor Fine Art Show in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

New Oil Paintings by known artist Steve Wetzel available at Brath and Hughes.

Steve is a native of York County, Pennsylvania growing up in the countryside just a few miles from Wrightsville near the York County-Lancaster County border. He currently lives near Harrisburg, but remains close to the Susquehanna River, which continues to be a popular subject in many of his landscape paintings.

He began to study painting in the 1980’s with Carrie Wissler-Thomas at the Art Association of Harrisburg. Here, Steve also studied plein air landscape painting with Lancaster County artist, John David Wissler for a number of years and subsequently stepped in as the instructor of the landscape class at the Art Association when the popular and well-loved “JD” needed to move on.

Steve has had numerous solo exhibits and has been included in many group and invitational shows, including numerous exhibits at the Governor’s Mansion in Harrisburg, the annual juried “Art of the State” exhibition held at the Pennsylvania State Museum, the Philadelphia Sketch Club, and the Cape Cod Museum of Art.

Mr. Wetzel also worked as a freelance editorial cartoonist and was a member of the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists. For years his editorial cartoons had been published frequently in the Harrisburg Patriot-News, and also appeared in the Altoona Mirror, the Allentown Morning Call, and the Philadelphia Daily News. Several of his cartoons are now in the permanent art collection of the Pennsylvania State Museum.

His work had been selected for the Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year anthology in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004, published by Pelican Press, and he was also profiled in the 2005 released Dorkstorm Press publication, “Attack of the Political Cartoonists”.

Paul Gallo grew up in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, a small coal-mining town near State College, Pennsylvania. Paul’s education is varied and includes studying at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, an AA from Harrisburg Area Community College and MFA from Syracuse University.

Working as an art director and creative director for several advertising agencies, Paul has won numerous awards for his illustration and graphic design. He now owns his own freelance illustration and graphic design business.

The Artist is a member of the "by invitation only" Seven Lively Artists - a group of men that have been painting and exhibiting for over 50 years in the Central Pa region. He is also a member of the Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters (SVPAP) which is a group of men and women that paint outside (en plein air) and exhibit regularly.

Plein air oil painting is his primary area of interest. Painting in a representational manner he enjoys utilizing the tactical quality of oil paints. He also teaches illustration and design at the college level and currently teaches at Art Institute of York, HACC and Penn State York.
